I have a 2002 Honda BF130 and when I put it in reverse and give it some throttle the engine comes up. Some say I have to rebuild the unit.

Hi,

Make sure that your manual release valve is closed tight. Item 17 in the parts blow up below. They do back off and might cause this.

If it is tight, check to see that the pivot pin for the lift cylinder (item 20) is still in place.

If those two things check ok then you will likely have a failure in the hydraulic pump and, yes, that will probably need extensive repair or replacement.

Good luck.

If your 2002 Honda BF130 engine comes up when you put it in reverse and give it some throttle, it could be due to an issue with the trim/tilt mechanism or the reverse lock mechanism. Some suggest rebuilding the unit, but before considering that, check if the Blow off valve in the hydraulic system is functioning correctly. A malfunctioning valve could cause the engine to rise under load.
