Tiller reassembly - grip now slips

Hi all,

I'm in the process of rebuilding a Honda 30HP SS 2001 outboard. I reconnected the throttle cables - and I know I have them in the right position. When I turn toward fast, the throttle linkages move properly, but as I move towards WOT, the shaft turns - but the throttle stops moving. Upon review, the slippage occurs right at the 'elbow'. I can see the shaft turn, but the plastic piece that holds the cable end does turn with the shaft. What did I miss?

Thanks, Chuck

I think you meant to type "the plastic piece that holds the cable end does not turn with the shaft". If part #18 is the shaft that is turning but the wheel at the end of it is not....then you need a new shaft. The shaft and wheel are one piece.

If that is not what you are talking about...tell me more...Then I obviously do not understand

Actually Mike you nailed it. The plastic piece was slipped on the metal tube. So, I pulled it apart and cleaned up the inside of the plastic piece and the outside of the metal tube with laquer thinner to remove any oil/grease. I then applied JB Weld and reassembled. It's been about 24 hours now, so it's set up pretty good now. If that doesn't work, I'll drill through the plastic and tube and insert a pin. That's a bit tricky as it needs to stay flush with the surface of the plastic to not interfere with turning.

I think this will do the trick. Thanks for your reply.

So that others who might have this problem know, the JB Weld did the trick. The plastic part on the end fits over a 'crimped' part of the metal pipe - and it was slipping. Not sure what caused it, but JB Weld is now holding it securely! If that didn't work, I was going to drill a hole through the plastic and the pipe and insert some type of pin.

If you are having problems hitting full throttle on your tiller operated outboard, you might want to check the operation of this part!

Every problem has a solution...that's why I lurk...to learn. Yeah, thanks for the update, I just might need this fix soon!
