Throttle cable, linkage pivot sliding

These are pictures of my throttle cable and linkage pivot... Am I putting it together wrong? It slides up and down within the linkage causing a delay in power

Hi George,
Welcome to the forum.

Hmmm....not sure.

What outboard is this for?

Remote control or tiller?

If you could list the frame number that might help.

My first guess is that something is missing there..
It would seem that there should be a little metal retainer clip there to hold the cable end in place. But, that's just a guess at this point.

Hopefully someone else here recognizes that set up.

Nice photos though!

Well, I probably should know what's up there because I have worked on those before. Although, I am more familiar with the remote control set ups. I can't really tell much from the parts page depiction but I attached it here for you to look at. They certainly don't list a separate part for retaining that cable end. But maybe looking at it will cause a bulb to light for you.

I know that my '06 20hp is very similar but it is a remote control and might not be "close enough" to reveal the secret. I can't even find a listing for the throttle or shift cables on boats.net.
But I will take a look when I get a chance and get back to you about it.

In the meantime, look around the splash tray under the carb and see if there's anything there that may have fallen off.

Sorry I can't be of more help right now.

Just another question....
Why were you doing this? Was it to replace the throttle cable by any chance?
Because, I do see where there was a change and the part number changed for that cable a couple of years later. If you bought a new cable, was it sourced using the frame (vin) number as reference?

I guess what I'm asking is....
....any possibility that you may have been sold the wrong cable?

Just a thought.

No I've never replaced the cable. The linkage broke so I bought a new one and didn't keep the old to compare it

Well, I tried looking at my remote set up and found it's impossible to see down in there without disassembly of at least the muffler. But I just can't take the time right now to do that.

I did find that the remote cable hooks to a lever and the lever works the throttle linkage so at least I know it is a bit of a different set up from the tiller where the cable, via that pivot link, hooks directly to the carb.

The part number for that pivot piece is the same for the 20hp tiller model and your 9.9.

I have yet to find a part listing for that pivot piece or even for a set of cables for my remote control set up so I can't compare that way either.

So, I'm afraid that I don't have an answer for you. I will keep looking though.
