Suspected VRO issue (J115PLEEM )

Good Afternoon fellow boaters,

I recently bought a Wellcraft 180 with a 115 Jhonson engine (J115PLEEM). Before taking it to the water, I tried running it as it was bought and it wouldnt start, which I changed the battery and the motor started right away, which brings me to the first time we took the boat to the first run since bought (and a long time since the last time on water, unknown at the moment) but during the first run, it performed with no problem whatsoever.

During the second time I took it out to the water, I had to start the engine a couple of times, with the trim up almost all the way (it seems to help) and after a few tries it started with no problems . After this time it sat out of the water for 1.5 months, when getting it ready for the day after, I tried starting it with no success. I check for battery and it was full and ready to go (14V), I checked for spark and all 4 cylinders were sparking perfectly ( a little too oily), and then I primed the motor with gas by pressing the bulb and it fired up but it struggled to keep idling. TO keep it from turning off I tried cranking some power and it would stabalize but after a couple of seconds it would turn off . Then I tried pumping/priming gas into the motor again and thats when I saw a leak/squirt of gas coming out of the VRO each time I tried pressing the bulb and it was solid, leading my main suspecion that the VRO is bad or not properly sealed.

Keep in mind the is my first boat and my first experience working with motors/outboards/boats, so I do not know anything about it and everything I have learned its from a SELOC Manual I just bought.

If any other information is needed please let me know and I will plan to visit the storage to provide pictures or supporting evidence to make it easier (I didnt think about taking pictures when I was troubleshooting, bummer!) Any help is deeply appreciate it !

Thank you in advance.

First get yourself a factory manual and use the Selco for fire-starting and emergency toilet tissue. Then you will know how to repair your engine and fuel system.

If you're squeezing the primer bulb and seeing leaks that's the first thing to fix. It could be a bad o-ring, a loose hose connection, or cracked plastic. Pictures would definitely help. Below are links to the fuel and carb component diagrams. This engine has plastic fuel bowls on the carbs and these are notorious for warping and leaking. Make sure the fuel leak you're seeing isn't maybe coming from there.

Carb & Intake Components

If you have to trim the motor up to start it that would sound like a sticking fuel float needle in one or more carbs.

THank you for the references a direction I can go to, also providing reference to the diagrams. Based on the diagram, it seems to be leaking from component 27, please see attached picture. I will be going to the storage later today to provide a picture and a possibly a video of the leak, I wont be able to turn on the motor since I wont have access to water.

Please see the image attached. I'm currently waiting for the gasket to get home, to replace and clean as recommended by racerone. But for a little more insight and maybe more feedback, see image attached. Please see video : J155PLEEM Fuel leak video
