Stripped screw head on distributor

While running the boat on Saturday, I hit a good wave (unintentionally) and the motor just STOPPED. Saw that the clip that holds down the distributor cap had fallen, so I knew I had lost contact. Turns out, the flathead screw is so worn I can't get it tighten, or loosen either way. What to do guys? Yes, I am a female! But I can still fix em up! Just need advise, please :)

Since you don't say what engine or distributor, here's my wild guess.

If it is a Prestolite distributor with the screw down clips, there's not much to be done in the way of repair since the screw goes into a little bent piece that is riveted to the side of the diz. Maybe the next size larger screw can be fit, but don't think so.
If it is the kind of distributor that has the swing out type hold downs, the hold downs may be replaced from an old distributor.
I would start looking on Ebay for a replacement. An new distributor is the best way to go, but will run 2-300 bucks.

That's what I was afraid of.... Believe I will just use some good old silicone and zip ties to get me thru the summer then! LOL! Thanks a bunch!! :)

I had one that the screw clip was stripped so I ended up using a longer screw that came out the bottom of the clip and put a nut on it. Makes it a bit of a pain in the ??? but it's not like I was taking the cap off every weekend.

Thanks for the responses! I ended up having a better look UNDER the dist cap, found that the points were slightly worn which made the cap not pop up the way it should, resulting in the clip not holding. Am now trying to find new contact to replace it. TUFF JOB! Not sure exactly what type of"vehicle" these points cross over to! This engine is a Ford 2.3L (metric) OMC Cobra. Any suggestions????

Huh???? How does a worn set of points cause the cap not to fit right??

If all you need is a new set of points then you can order them from here, they have a Sierra set for $6.43
