"Greetings Group, Can you tell

"Greetings Group, Can you tell me if there is any truth to the story that some marine machnic told me when i told him i owned a 1977 stringer, behind a Ford 351 with electric shift. He said that i was sitting on " a time bomb ". Claims the casing on the electric magnets breaks down, letting 12 volt current put both forward and reverse gears in play at the same time, blowing the lower unit.
This sounds like BS to me, because the magnets are in oil, so how can they break down. I have heard that the switch controlling the forward/reverse magnets, have caused this problem.
Can someone please set the record stright on the electric shift problems for this model out drive. If there is something i can learn to prevent a problem, now is the time to do it. Thanks people, Herb"

"Well, I'm currently using a 1965 SUE-13 behind a 225 Buick V6,in a Chris Craft 20 ft Corsair, and I've had zero problems with it. EVRYone I talked to cursed at these drives as if they were Satan himself."

"Thanks Scott, i also hear ni

"Thanks Scott, i also hear nightmare stories. I think it is a well designed unit, and that an owner just needs to follow the manual. There was some to do about the wrong switch being used, that did not hold continuity, causing the gear to come out of gear, then slam back in again when the contact was re-established. Have you heard of anyone changing the forward-reverse switch because of any problem as mentioned above ? Thanks, Herb"

"Yes I have.... a friend of mine installed a 3 way (center neutral) switch to replace the one in the throttle lever, and it worked fine. The only problem he has is when approaching the dock, he has to REALLY watch what hes doing with that switch.
