Starting issue with my BF150

Hi,
I had my boat out on the ocean this past Sunday. Leaving the dock, I foolishly got outside of the channel (at slow speed) and partially on a shallow mudflat. There was no problem backing the boat off a few feet. I continued on for another two hours with no issues. I then turned the 150 off and ran from crab pot to crab pot with my 9.9 kicker motor.
Come time to leave, the big motor would not start. It sounded like the starter solenoid would not engage. I replaced to starter and I have the same issue with the new starter. The prop turns freely when in neutral and turns with resistance when in gear. The resistance seems okay when compared with the kicker motor and the sparkplugs are in, etc.
I hope this is not a result of the run onto the mud flat (again, the motor ran fine for 2 hours with no vibration, etc. )
Is there a secondary solenoid switch in addition to the one on the starter?
Any help/ feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Roger

Hi,
This just might be a coincidence.

Have you checked/tested the cranking battery? If not, do that first.

Did you wire brush clean the battery cable ends when you installed the new starter?

If not, I suggest wire brush cleaning both cable ends at the battery or combi switch
And while those are disconnected at that end, wire brush the positive end at the starter magnetic switch (solenoid) AND the NEGATIVE cable end that is bolted to the engine. Do that and try again.

Many, many, many times cranking issues are nothing more than bad connections with the battery cables.

Good luck.

Hi, Thank you for the reply. It did in fact involve bad connections. I have a junction block (on the rear deck behind a bulkhead) where I have connected the cables from the center console(batteries) to those from the motor. Like a fool I neglected to do routine maintenance on the connections. We bypassed everything and went direct from the battery to the motor and the motor turned over just fine.
Thanks again!
Roger
