Stall on plane 1996 7.4 L

Floatation Device

Contributing Member
I have a 1996 SeaRay 330 with twin 7.4 MIE's. Idles all day with no issue. Run on plan and the starboard engine stalls. Wait ten mintes, engine restarts and idles fine but will die again on plane. No set time for stalling. Carb is flooded which I believe takes the ten minutes to start. Switched ignition module, anti knock module, coil, between the engines, still occurs on strbd engine. Change fuel filter, rebuilt carb, same problem. Have ordered new fuel pump and switched the dist. sensors. Will test this weekend. Have not check if vent is clogged. Any other suggestions?

Re: Stall on plane

Check all the way back to the tank. Be sure there is good flow, you aren't sucking water or anything like that. See that the anti siphon valve is OK and the filters aren't clogged...also the supply hoses can get messed up from ethanol if they are old.

Re: Stall on plane

crud in tank clogging the screen when fuel draw is high. Vent line being clogged is another likely candidate.

Re: Stall on plane

Engine carb bowl is losing fuel when planing, thus it stalls. Follow the advice above; carb swap first.

Re: Stall on plane

I rebuilt both carb's late last week. Pull the fuel pump on the strbd engine and found gas on the cam side of the pump down in the cam housing. The breather tube was also plugged. Ordered a new pump. received a sierra pump, but the lever was too long and the ports in the worng place. Ordered an Airtex pump, cheaper at $67, and ordering a mercruise pump, 186, just in case the airtex doesn't fit. Waiting for pumps to arrive. Does this sound like the issue with fuel on the back side of the pump diaphragm?

Re: Stall on plane

yes. Leave pump in place and use a cheap auto dc pump for testing, 4-7 psi 8 ok also no more and certainly no less.

That ain't a breather tube if it's the return to the carb.

"Does this sound like the issue with fuel on the back side of the pump diaphragm?"

I would say it's a big contributor. Nobody cleans out the nipple for the sight hose to the carb; they plug up w/varnish from a tiny leak.

Re: Stall on plane

Nipples on both carb's & pumps were plugged. Picked up a pump from Marine Max. Instead of getting a hose, got hosed. $200. Mechanic was at the counter, confimed pump is bad. He described my problem when he seen I had a pump. Based on guyig's comment, better replace both pumps. Thanks for the help.

Re: Stall on plane

I got burnt by West Marine saying they had the pump for $99. Level to long and ports not in the right position. Running out of time for a trip this weekend. Marine Max can get over night. Have a airtex pump ordered thru Napa but not sure it will be here in time. I will loose more in slip fees if I can't make the trip along with having to listen to the wife.

Re: Stall on plane

divorce the wife keep the boat, and dog.

Dog won't nag you, just as warm as the wife to sleep next to, won't try to change you, doesn't care if you smell, or take a bath.

Is always happy to see you. Doesn't care if you leave the seat up. Won't call the cops if you smack it.

Won't care if you don't like it's parents.

Doesn't care if you drink too much.
