Snapped bolts nightmare!!!

Good afternoon family!!!* I wanted inspect the condition of the thermostat on this 88 60 Johnson outboard. I've had this boat for at least 6 years sitting up mostly in my garage. I started first by attempting to remove the five screws surrounding house to the thermostat. Almost immediately with a little turn it snapped, ok PB blaster time. After liberal spray ang wait times 30-45 minutes, try this secondbolt(snap), third(snap), nooo not fourth!!! (yep, snaped too). I'm a little sick at this point. Got 1 more to go....so i* take a deep breath, lightly turned the last one and that snapped too. All five bolts recessed in the motor snapped off.... I was fortunate enough to get the housing off. It looks like the bolts snapped off right in the block. Also dont see a thermostat anywhere in there.* Also I attempted to drill out several of the screws, but failed after the carbide drill broke into the screw I was trying to remove. Dont know what to do at time point. Any and all advise would be greatly appreciated!!!! Thank you

Must be a salt water motor.------There should have been a thermostat in there along with poppit valves.----Any pictures ?------Sounds like you have a lot of work ahead of you.----Perhaps a visit to a machine shop or make a drilling fixture / guide to drill the bolts out.----If it does not run perhaps it is just a parts motor now.

And now you know what we mean when we say that drilling out screws is a learned skill. You certainly will screw (no pun intended) it up on the first dozen or so. I used to do it every day, it seems like.

To start out with, get yourself some left handed drill bits. Watch out with E-Z outs. If you break one of them off your "screwed". I had some and gave them away.

Luckly they are in the head which can be removed ...carefully if a salt or brackish water engine. Whem removed you can ..A) have drilled out on drill press or B) replace head..my prefrence as they are cheap used.

Thank you guys for the information!!! I really appreciate it!! What are thoughts on getting the powerhead off and see about possibly taking it to a machine shop to get these broken screws drilled out?

Cheaper to find a good used head on E-bay.----Same head used on 70 HP 3 cylinder from 78 to the 60 ( prop rated ) to 1988.----Your location ?
