"I have a 1989 40HP mariner Magnum O.B.Is there anyway to adjust the oil injection to reduce the amount of smoke when running at low idle? It has always done this, since new and the dealer says it is what it is!"

"Dealer is correct. Your model

"Dealer is correct. Your model has a simple "Constant Rate" 50:1 oil pump. I has nothing to adjust, nothing to set, it either pumps or it doesn't on it's manufactured settings.

The extra smoke may be partially due to running the carbs a little rich, in addition to whatever the oil pump in contributing. You could try leaning out a bit.

However, everyone perception is subjective. How much smoke are you getting when running at idle?

You are creating a big cloud behind you, or you can just see/smell it (which you wouldn't at higher speed because you are moving away from the fumes quickly)."

"Thanks Graham,

"Thanks Graham,
It smokes to where you can just see it behind the boat. It's more of the nauseating smell.Yes at high speed you really don't see or smell anything.
RS"

"Randy, that sounds about norm

"Randy, that sounds about normal for a 2 stroke - only real cure is replace it with a 4 stroke.

But as mentioned you could lean it out just a touch and it may make all the difference to you personally.

However, it is always better to run a little rich. It just protects the engine better - the cost is a little more smoke....."
