Shifting linkage

Me and the ‘06 15 hp again. The shift linkage I have played with twice in the 13 years of ownership. Last summer the water
pump was installed. The linkage is close to be in good position
Sitting still it won’t left me shift into reverse. When the engine
running it does. It just needs to be adjusted in the right direction. Do I go up or down towards reverse?? With the two nuts? Thanks again.

Are you turning the prop while trying to shift without the engine running? You MUST do this when shifting the transmission this way or it tends to bind up sometimes.

To set up the linkage, you should have the long nut threaded onto the lower shaft approximately 3/16". If it isn't engaging reverse, turn the long nut counterclockwise 1/4 to 1/2 turn and try reverse again. Once it reliably shifts to reverse, check to see that it will still select forward gear easily. If not, you will need to turn the long nut clockwise slightly until both gears can be selected then tighten the jam nut and check one last time as tightening the jam nut can alter the adjustment.

Make sure that you remember to turn the prop anytime you attempt to shift. Having a helper turn the prop allows you to concentrate on the adjustment. It doesn't matter which direction you turn the prop as it only needs to be in motion to allow the clutch dogs to engage instead of binding.

If you don't turn the prop and then apply force trying to shift, you can damage the linkage and make getting a good adjustment difficult to obtain.

Good luck.

Forgot about the turning. I have had it in reverse before towing so prop doesn’t turn going down the road. Motor is deep in a barrel of water now. Man is driving 2 hrs to buy boat. Thanks.
