shift cable sync for merc-to-OMC Cobra SX drive 1998 4.3 L

gentlemen, I have a '98 4Winns 4.3L V/Pwith factory control box & SX drive. Connector broke on shift cable at box end. I replaced calbe and cannot reseat the hex under the handle and still keep the shifter in Neutral. I've adjusted box and drive ends 1000 ways to no avail. I'd appreciate a little help!

Can you please post a pic? Not sure what you are having difficulty with, assuming that you have the correct replacement parts. You did not change the adjustment at the drive shift cable did you?

I'm not quite understanding what "Merc" or "OMC Cobra" has to do with a 1998 Volvo Penta SX drive!


Anyway........ More info is needed, and photos would be very helpful!

FYI, and certainly no harm/no foul........, but this would be best had it been posted in the Volvo Penta section.
There should be nothing OMC on your 1998 engine/drive package.
OMC was out of the picture during and shortly after 1993.

Gentlemen my apologies for giving incorrect info based on (obviously poor) memory. No photos avail. I have a Teleflex control box and Volvo Cobra SX drive. I believe I should have connected the ctrl bx cable end first, replaced handle, MADE SURE handle and box were in neutral then reseated the allen screw that secures handle to shift/throttle shaft. Only then should I have placed the drive-end in neutral and adjusted the new cable to fit. Am I now on the right track?
 
The critical dimension is the adjustment of the cable that goes to the drive. As long as you don't F with it it shouldn't be any big thing to swap in a new control cable from the helm. If it was in N when you took off the old cable it should go back no problemo. If not, you gotta get the drive in neutral first before doing anything.
