Shift cable help

My father in law has an older pontoon boat that needs the shift cable replaced. I went off info he had given me and ordered a replacement cable and of course it ended up being the wrong cable. I have since did some research of my own and found the OB is a 1985 Mariner 40hp, model 40EL 6E9L 421562. The controller is a Mercury commander. The replacement cable I bought fit the engine fine but the plastic guide that goes into the controller is too long. The replacement cable I purchased was a Teleflex 3300. I do not have the original cable as it was thrown away by my father in law. Can someone point me in the right direction to get the correct replacement cable.

You should still be able to use the 3300 which is a very "generic" cable, you will just need the "end" that is compatible with your control (different ends that will screw onto the 3300's are available from numerous sources - that's the beauty of the 3300's).

Find a marine parts place that carries a significant product line should be able to get you sorted out without having to go the expense of a whole new cable.

Thanks for the response. I don't fully understand how the end that goes to the controller can be replaced. It appears to be molded plastic. The end of the cable that goes to the engine is threaded and can have different "ends" installed but not the side that goes to the controller. Below is a picture of the cable. Wes pontoon cable.jpg

That doesn't look like what I (know) as a 3300 (or old Morse 33C).

The 3300's should have the screw connector at each end so that you can select your end (as in the diagram below that I just got from SeaStar (who owns teleflex now).

It looks like you got a "brand specific" cable there, like a 179, instead of the generic 3300.
