Shallow water OOOPs!!!!

I am new to boating and the other day in my 20' with a 470 Mercruiser I/O I found myself kicking up a lot of mud. My question is simple. If I sucked mud into the impeller could it cause the engine to run like crap. I am having a problem throttling up. Every time I throttle up the motor bogs down and sputters. Please help!!!!

bunch of mud could damage the impeller and cause overheat problems. what your describing sounds like you got stuff stuck on the prop or damage around the skeg area, did you check the prop etc?

The prop looks good and I m only running at 140 degrees. Had it out last night after putting on a new fuel filter water seperator and again could only run at about 1200 rpm's. The temperature never ran hot at all. It just seems to bog down when I try to throttle up. Thanks and any advice you could give me at all is greatly appreciated as I am new to marine engines.
