sensor/trigger coil testing

VJ200SLEID motor. Using SELOC book, resistance test for the trigger coil with a digital multimeter. Book says resistance can vary with meters but should be less than 1000 ohms. I'm getting over 1meg ohm. Motor started hard first time, sometimes would stop 2 to 4 times at idle after starting, started first try after stopping. Checked spark, wasn't getting spark on top 2 plugs starboard side.Wondering if it should have started and run with such high resistance readings. Could I have damaged to trigger coil with an ohmmeter? Am I missing something? Probably need to connect everything back up and see if it will start but would like to know if I might have done something wrong.

The current your ohmeter would have passed through the coil is too small to have damaged it.

If you are reading over 1 megohm the coil is opencircuited
