Hello to all.
I would like to first say that I'm glad there is forms to help others in need with things they enjoy. 2 I'm also in another form on old Goldwings and do my best to help others with there issues getting them up and running with the unwritten information you can't find in any manual. So right up front thank you for helping others out.. I was raised in Florida around 115 v4 Evinrude engines. I've owned 2 of them and they went down due to ring failure. ruined the wall. I'm tooled for major overhaul type repair and do have a manual. I wouldent consider myself a rookie around an outboard engine. but I don't know everything. I managed to pick up a 1985 Johnson J90TLCOS for next to nothing. As soon as I got it home I replaced the water impeller with housing kit thermostats kit. Cleaned out the carburetors top to bottom. new plugs fuel line filter and a fresh source of 50/1 gas mix. e10 free. When I fired it up it ran like 4 drummers hitting @ the right tune. Not like a loose or old engine would run, bang...bang.. .ba,.. ba.. bang.bang. This engine is super tight. When I cracker the throttle it was right there. The idle seems a bit slow but the engine don't shake the steering linkage. As soon as I started it I put my thumbs on the top of the heads to check for heat. (older Evinrudes I've had would run not to hot 1974 115 crossflow. But this one is warmer for sure. I put the lazer on it it slowly climbed to 150 the engine started to change tone and slow down then I shut it down. I fear of overheating. I restarted it it repeated the same thing tone change then it died. I let it cool down 90f removed the hoses to the thermostats let it run out of the heads it idled for 15 minuets no issues.
Tonight I removed the lower unit thermostat housing hooked a hose to the input tube ran water into it it ran out the heads checked inside the thermostat housing (engine side) with compressor air and a rubber tube looked up into all the holes for blockage in the engine All is clear. Did I miss something?
when I installed the thermostats into the block the cork was under them they are facing the right way (removed and replace) just like it came out there was a new looking t stats in it purple color springs and no trash around the plastic caps. There is flow out the pisser should I remove the heads and go further or run with no t stats? Either way I don't want to hurt this tight engine Alarms work no alarm. But that don't mean there good @ the block side. censor might be bad 160 seems hot to me for running temp to hot to keep your thumbs on never had an engine run that hot ever.. T stat removal or no? I also checked the little holes for blockage and super cleaned the inside where they rest all is clean all is clear. Any comments would be great. Thanks for reading .. Signed OFF THE CLOCK..
