Replacing kill switch on 97 evinrude control box

I have a 97 evinrude115 E115eleua. My service manual doesn't really give me much detail, and I'm not gonna spend 100's of dollars in labor replacing at the most a $50 part. On my control box the kill switch operates by clamping on to an emergency ignition nut, looking at the diagram on this website, I'm not really sure if I have to replace just the nut, (since mine is literally gone) or if I have to replace the entire key insert that comes with the nut... and I also have no clue how to take it apart.. I'm definitely not trying to mess up anything important!! But I need a kill switch..

Part number 0175974 is what mine is supposed to look like. If you look up my model number on here and go to accessories then click on controls, scroll down to where it says "remote control- side mount-key switch." It's the exact one in the boat

The key broke off in my original ignition. Got a brand new one at Bay, replaced it myself. Took less than 1/2 hour.

If they ever give me my boat back I could use a hand with that Dave. I think my insert is wore out. Now when I push it in for the electric solenoid to crank it the key doesn't stay in the on position,it slowly turns all the way back to the off position eventually. To turn the Motor on I have to push the key in all the way then turn it on, let the motor warm up, turn it off then turn it back to keep the key engaged in the on position.

Yeah I think so.. I got the boat back today. I have just a universal kill switch lanyard and trying to get it latched on is near impossible.. not sure if I'm latching it on the right way. Doesn't the lanyard just clamp on around the nut? Cause if so how would I get the lanyard to latch on? Is it supposed to go just on it? Or is the lanyard supposed to go around the emergency stop nut?

Use the "U" shaped one in picture on very end...

Ah ha! That's what I've done wrong. *face palm* I'm used to the newer kill switches on the newer boats. My uncle said he's never gotten it to work right from the beginning. I plan on starting the break in of the new SEI gearcase I got so I will test the switch myself!

This year switch does not "kill" if the lanyard is removed, it is spring loaded internally and physically turns key to off position to kill. That why it will run with lanyard removed...
