I have a 65 ft aluminum swiftboat need to replace the two 12-71 with a new detroit diesel motors that will fit the existing engine supports. Need around 800hp per engine or better with a better fuel economy.

Up until a couple of years ago, I worked off road heavy equipment. We ran many V12-71 for a long time. The continuing environmental constraints on leakage and smoke stack particulate matter forced us to find alternatives to the V-12. We ended up retrofitting the Detroit Diesel Series 60 with electronic controls in place of the V12-71.

As far as boats go, they aren't my area of expertise, per se, but I do know that there is much reading and many options for what you are considering. The Series 60 marine application can be had in 825 hp rating. MTU, which is the Diamler/Mercedes version of the Series 60 probably offers something similar as well as Caterpillar and others like Lugger and M.A.N. (which I, personally would avoid).

My personal experience with the Series 60 in trucks and grading equipment has been excellent. They are tough, reliable and easy to maintain engines albeit expensive. They do not "drop in" the same mounts as the V-12 but I don't imagine any other four stroke alternative does either. They actually present a smaller footprint and should take up less engine room space.
