Raw Water Pumps - Flo Jet & Others

Just thought I would post an interesting (and costly) experience so others might learn from my mistake.

My raw water pump for onboard wash downs stopped working. I first tested the switch and wiring. All of that was good. Time to remove the pump. It was a bugger to get to and took two hours to extract from the bowls of my transom, having to first remove a rod holder and battery switch to get to it.

Initially bench tested and it was dead. So I got online to ordered a new pump - over $200 including shipping.

Then I accidently dropped it on the workbench and heard a click. Bench tested it again, and it worked fine. After just a bit of investigation, I found that the pressure switch on top of the pump was sticking. That pressure switch turns off the motor once the pressure in the pump reaches 40 PSI. This particular pump was a Flo Jet 4325, but most of these pumps seem to work on the same principal - when you open up the faucet, the pressure drops and activates the pump.

I found a replacement pressure switch on line for $33.00. So now I have an extra fine working water pump. I'll probably hook it up with battery alligator clips and a pick up and exhaust hose and keep it onboard as an emergency bilge pump. But it was a costly lesson learned.
