Question about Car Air Conditioning

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew how much it would cost me to install an air conditioner into a car that was not made with one. I've tried Google, but can only get rough estimates from American sites, which say $2,000-$4,000, which seems a bit much but I guess that's what I have to go off. I'm interested in buying my first car, and it's an older car (1977) but it's basically been all done up, with the only feature missing being air conditioning. A/C is quite important in North Queensland, as it gets very hot and humid most of the year, and if A/C costs too much to install, I may have to give it a miss.

Not trying to be rude here but just because it says HONDA doesn't necessarily mean AUTOMOBILE. This is the HONDA OUTBOARD MOTOR forum for BOATS. HONDA also makes lawnmowers, tillers, pumps, compressors and generators just to name a few. Not quite sure how you ended up here but you will likely get a more accurate reply to your question on an automotive forum.

Ironically though , I am an EPA, universal refrigerant, certified air conditioning technician retired from the heavy truck and bus industry in the USA. I think the "retrofit" that you propose should not cost $4000 but could approach $2000 easily. The cost would be somewhat dependent on local economic conditions and I have no idea what an Aussie dollar is compared to the Yank. I wouldn't try it though. If AC is important to you, then you should look for a car with a factory unit that works well.

I'm old enough to remember that "air conditioning" meant rolling the window down. Good luck with your first set of wheels and remember, tracks are for racing and streets are for kids to play in.
Gday mate!
