Problem installing new shift cable in Bayliner 2452 Alpha 350

Guys:
Have Bayliner 2452.

I replaced the bellows and am on last leg of putting everything back together.
I can not seem to fish the shift cable through the gimbel housing into the boat even with a fish wire from the engine compartment.
Keep hitting metal that is keeping the shift cable from going around the starboard exhaust pipe. Fish wire does not seem to help.
Do you have to take out the 2 piece plastic bushing to get more room and more angle? Can you get bushing out without destroying it?
I tried but it seems to be locked in so I did not force anything so it is still in tact. Bet there are some tricks to this.
Can anyone help me? I am 2 weeks late getting boat into the water and I am missing the King Salmon derby here in Ketchikan.
Help please!

You have the right idea but try this instead . I dont know what kind of fish wire your using, I use .030 stainless steel saftey wire, attach wire to cable end than using electrical tabe wrap around saftey wire and cable end so there is a smooth surface one wrap only, you don't want it to thick, If you have someone to help you, have them feed cabe assy slowly as you pull on the feed wire, this will help cable end go past turn,

routing of the cable if of the upmost importance!!!!!!!

If you route it wrong it will rub on the coupler and get cut thru.........

It must pass between the exhaust horn and the bellhousing (forgot the correct term). It is about a 1/2" gap. This is the location (between the exhaust and housing) where the spiral wrap is suposed be on the outside diameter of the cable when the cable is completely pulled thru and in position.

Thanks for the help! I used a 1/8" aluminum wire and stuck it into the shift cable end about 1/2" and then taped it in place. Having the aluminum wire inside the shift cable end gave it more of a positive guide to get through the crack. Worked first time. The aluminum fish wire is malible and can hold shape so you can find the opening quite easily, like first try. Thanks again.

Next time :
remove drive
remove shift cable core
loosen nut on shift cablefrom transom
using weed whacker cord or a control cable core slide it thru the cable casing from inside of boat to outside, leave 4-5 feet outside
retract this core to slide shift boot thru it and glue and clamp to transom
re-set core and pass it thru new shift cable and vise-grip the core to act as a stop
using this core from inside the boat, pull the new cable in place.putting this in the old core acts as a guide for the new core to help get it thru the motor mount area
once thru MM area, tighten shift cable nut in housing and do the remaining install normally.
