primer solenoid issues / questions

I have a 1985 Evinrude 150hp v6. I noticed the primer solenoid doesn't always click when the key is on and the key pushed in. Its been intermittent. Will this cause my gettingvstranded issues and the motor intermittently not starting at times?. So if it doesn't click its not working right? So to check it can I run a jumper from the positive battery terminal and touch it to the power connection on the solenoid to see if that powers it and I get the click noise with causing an issue?

Yes, you can jump the positive on the solenoid, but you might want to make sure that your connection on the positive on the solenoid is clean and not causing the problem. Good luck

Ok...so the jumper worked a few times then the solenoid quit working. Gave it a hour and it worked again. So do u see these solenoid malfunction intermittently? And when they are malfunctioned will that cause the intermittently not starting of the motor?

Think of the Fuel Primer Solenoid as an Electric Choke Butterfly..... If it does not click in, no fuel can be delivered to the intake manifold area. Bottom Line is that if the engine requires a prime to start, then yes, a non working primer solenoid would prevent a engine from starting.

However, before replacing the primer solenoid.... repeat that voltage jumper test and when the solenoid suddenly stops clicking in... check the jumper wire terminal for the proper voltage. If the full 12 volts voltage is still present at the jumper wire terminal... then replace the fuel primer solenoid.

Ok...I took it off and apart. Cleaned the little filter. Everything looks good but I'm not sure what I'm looking for exactly. Where's a good place to find a new plunger and gasket?
