I recently installed a new trim motor on a 1996 mercury 90 hp. It worked great for about 5 minutes, then it started making a terrible noise & will not tilt up or down. A friend said it needed bleeding. I'm not certain how to do it properly. But I did get some air out of it. But now it will not stay tilted when I tighten the bypass screw. The screw did blow out on me. Does the pump need bleeding or did I purchase a bad trim motor?

Put the engine all the way up, do it manually if you have to, remove the fill cap. Top off the reservoir leave the cap off and go up and down. Put a try under to catch the excess fluid. Once you get it moving, tilt the engine all the way up and top off the fluid and reinstall the cap.
It will take a while, sometimes a long while, to bleed all of the air and for the noise to stop.

Thanks.

That sounds like what I need now.

I uninstalled the tilt motor & found that the shaft I had problems with initially had popped out.

I used my old shaft.

Reinstalled it & it moved just a little one time.

It won't move now, but it does sound right.

I will try to get more air out.

I will let you know how if it works.

Thanks.

I really need to get glasses. I missed this sentence. The bypass screw blew out? Did you loosen it?

Yes the motor runs & if I raise the outboard manually & hold back on it, it will pull itself down.
But it will not pull itself up.

The switch on the outboard is the only one I have tried lately.

Thanks for any help you can give.

I hope it isn't shot.

When I first replaced the motor it worked like a charm for about 5 minutes.
The the little shaft jumped out of place.

It has been a headache ever since.

I'm told it needs bleeding.

It is very heavy to work up and down by hand.

So can I take it loose from the outboard, leave it hooked to the pump & work it with the switch?

I disconnected the trim motor & pump from the outboard & worked it up & down with the switch.
Finally got the air out, reconnected it to the motor & it works!
