overheating 225 honda

After changing the oil and filter, started the engine and after a few minutes the heat alarm went off. The water from the telltale exhaust is cool, the water from the exhaust is hot and the water jackets are hot. Seems like a thermostat problem. Exactly where is the thermostat
located. There is a hose on either side of the water jacket. Is the thermostat on top or bottom of those hoses?

If you were running that engine on muffs, that would be normal. Those engines will overheat when they are run on muffs for about 10 minutes or less, depending on you water pressure from the source. You cannot put enough water through the muffs to adequately cool the engine.

thank you for your reply. I did use muffs and I belief that was the problem.

I happened to run mine on the muffs today down in South Florida here. It took 3 or 4 minutes and the alarm was sounding. I pushed on the muffs and held them there and the alarm turned off. It simply wasn't getting enough water.

I find this strange because I've run this motor on the muffs probably 20 times before and never had this happen. But today the weather was really hot, I wonder if that contributed to it?

I should probably replace the impeller soon anyway.

Strange that muffs don't get enough pressure. The water pressure from my hose seems adequate.

The first time I ran my 200's on muffs, the alarm sounded, but it was a single feed flusher. I purchased the dual feed and have not had any issues with heat while flushing since then. The dual feed fits tight and seems to push plenty of water.
