Outboard not going into gear

Hi I have a Honda 5hp long shaft outboard. It starts and worked perfectly. Not sure if related but got caught up on the canal (maybe low water or a few plants (Engine didn't conk out) but it wouldn't engage into forward or reverse.

I've checked the prop and there is nothing on it or wrapped round it. Engine starts fine and there are no cables. When I put it into forward or reverse it doesn't work. I've checked the bolts etc which move up and down from the top to the bottom on the plate above the prop.

Any ideas what else I could try or potentially what has happened to it as there doesn't seem to be anything that's triggered it. It's on a sailing boat so no controls just extended handles.

Thanks

Are you sure the shear pin is visible ??----Have you removed the propeller to inspect the shear pin / drive pin ----yes or no ??

Hi, no, apologies, there seems to be a sort of pin coming out of the bottom of propeller which I thought you meant. I've not taken off the propeller yet. I know the pin you mean now, could it be that's got damaged? Also what is the pin type thing visible on the outside of the propeller?

Cheers again

Check the simple things first I say.----If it is not that shear pin / drive pin , the repairs could get expensive.

Sorry----I have no idea what pin was / is in there.----It is up to you to check it.-----Or visit your local friendly shop as they will help you.

Hi wooney,

Sorry you're having problems.

There is a shear pin....see item 12 in the link below. It is located behind the propeller. It has probably fractured.

The pin you see externally is a split pin or sometimes called a spring pin. (See item 18.) It is used to retain the propeller cap. (Item 13)

You will need to remove the split pin in order to remove the cap and then the propeller to access the shear pin.

Most outboards that have shear pins come with a spare one mounted somewhere on the outboard. Usually under the hood. I don't know where your spare would be located as I have never changed one on a 5 hp. Also, if you aren't the original owner the spare may have already been used.

Good luck.

Thanks a lot for this. Really helpful, appreciate it

Have you maintained this motor ?------Checked / changed gear oil recently ?------If gearcase was full of water or empty it may have suffered there.

wooney,

Look at items 25, 21 and 36 in the link below. That shows you the spare pins and the holder along with where they should be located under the hood. That is, if they haven't already been used and not replaced.

Also, don't try substituting something for a shear pin. They are designed to break during an impact to save your propeller and transmission components from being damaged.

Good luck.

Ok, it sounds very much like the prop driveshaft to prop isn’t functioning properly, as a quick check, remove the engine and put it on a stand of some sort, *Important* pull the spark plug lead off so it defo won’t fire or better still remove the spark plug, put the engine in forward gear, lift the start inhibit lever out the way and pull the starter cord, you should see the prop turn, now put your foot on the prop to hold it still and pull the cord again, if the prop now doesn’t turn either your prop shear pin is sheared or if the prop has an elastomer Cush drive, the elastomer is shot. Let us know once you have done that simple test let us know the result.

Thanks for this, I'll have a look after the weekend when I go to the boat. Appreciate it will save me a lot of time. :)

As per the other text I've only just bought the boat so don't really know too much about the engine.

Cheers Tony. I'm not that experienced with maintenance on outboards so hopefully the shear pin replacement will do the trick. Sounds from what I've seen online it's had a knock and was working fine until we hit some bushes/branches on the canal.

I'm based in the UK so will give you a call then if I need assistance. Nice of you to offer.

No probs Bud you are more than welcome. As I’ve said I’ll be back post 28th so feel free to give me a call when you have the engine with you
