Operating without a shift cover?

On a recent fishing trip, I lost the shift cover for my outdrive (very strange, it must have rattled loose - ?)

Any problems operating the boat - temporarily - until I can locate a used cover?

I have heard (not verified) that without the cover, hydro dynamics can work against the eccentric piston seal, and in some cases will/can/may force water into the transmission.

Kim, Gary out of Bandon replaced U-joints last summer and did R&R on the trans.

Rick, that doesn't sound good. I'll get a cover before operating again. We did continue to operate without the cover for a few days while on our trip - other than checking the oil, is there another or better way to check to see if water has penetrated the eccentric seal?

I seen lots in Alaska without the cover. I asked a guy why so many guys took the cover off.
I don't remember the answer but it didn't make any sense.

Rick, is there another term for the eccentric piston seal? - Shift cam seal, perhaps? Whether the most current seal was used or not, I do not know, I would hope so.

The work completed:

Go through upper gear
R&R Crosses
R&R Blue Seal and head washer
Set Vert Shaft Clearance .04
R&R Shift Cam seal
