OMC COBRA starter problem

This spring I couldn't get the starter to engage only got a click when I tuened on the ignition.
Took it to the marina and two days later and a $500 bill they got it running. I thought it was the starter but they said no.
This summer used it 3 or 4 times and was ready to pull it out and store it and once again only got a click when I turned on the ignition. Thought it might be the Battery so I jumped it and only a click. Then I thought I'd take a large screwdriver and shorted out the solenoid on the back of the engine on top an bingo the starter engaged and it started. I'm thinking it's the solenoid not making a good contact or it could just be the wiring has to be cleaned to get a better contact.
Looking for suggestions!!!!

Thank jim

The base of the slav solenoid is the ground. Take it off and clean the base and the mount. Make sure you disconnect the battery first.

And yea i would call the mechanic and see what they did.

Pay for proper and complete diagnostics up front...... and diagnostics that idendify the problem.
Only then do you authorize the work upon receiving a work scope "quote" that implies that this will fix the issue.

Otherwise, you're funding someone's vacation or retirement.
