Oil leak assistance.

Hey fellas im back with more questions, here it goes... 2002 bf225 322hrs on the clock. So tilted the engines up and after a few hours the starboard engine started a small leak right where the lower unit bolts up to the upper half. I cleaned and trimmed it down and poof leak is gone. Some have said is the shift shaft seal. What do you guys think? And how can i access this seal and hopefully replace it. Thank you guys.

If it leaks out the weep hole when trimmed up, then it can very likely be the shift shaft seal. Drop the lower unit and look around the shift shaft to see if there is some oil pooled up there.

It is jot leaking from the weep hole at all. The leak is from where the lower unit bolts up to the upper case. Think of it as if you were removing the lower unit and undoing the six bolts thats where the leak is from.

Well, there are two "oil" seals in there...the shift shaft seal and the vertical shaft seal. If either of them is leaking, it could cause this. Otherwise , that cavity only sees water. The only other thing I would think it could be would be a crack or hole of some sort in the gear case. I think that is highly unlikely but something to consider. The only way to effectively diagnose it would be to pull the lower unit. With it off, the source "should" be readily evident. I've never done these on the larger outboards but I can tell you I don't like doing either of these seals on the smaller (20 and below) ones. A real PITA! But, like anything else that is a "chore" the hard part is probably just grittin' up and gettin' started.
