Oil filter

Hi Guys... What oil filter should I be using on a Mercruiser four-cylinder, 140 HP, 181 disp, Barr Marine engine? Many thanks.
Bruce

Ayuh,... That motor uses the same filter as the SBCs do...

They come in short, mid-length, 'n long...

I use Napa branded Wix filters myself...

the filter thread is 13/16 x 16 NPT. The o-ring gasket has diameter of 3.25", it runs along the
outside of the top of the filter.

Short length filters are:
-------------------------------
Fram PH30
supertech st30
wix51046, wix51069, 51086, 51087
napa 1046,1086,1087
purolator per12, per49,
acdelco pf12, pf2525,
motorcraft FL10, FL775
sierra 18-7824

The long lengths are:
----------------------------------
Mobil m1-302
Fram hp4, ph5, ph13, ph373
wix51060-51061-51794
napa1060-1061-1069
per40,
per84pf11, pf35 pf1218, (pf832-932)FL308
sierra 18-7877

Does it matter if you use short length over long or vis versa? And what kind/type/brand/weight of oil to use?? Thanks. Havent got a manual yet just trying to get basic stuff first.

Can't imagine why two shop manuals wouldn't put that data in the book........
We can't imagine why this info isn't in your log book from the last oil filter change! (I'm half joking.... but you get my point! :D)

Enter the filter # into you log book, and write the date and engine hours onto the new filter.

.

And what kind/type/brand/weight of oil to use??
It will run on straight 30 Wt. 15W40 wt. of the major manufacturers or Merc. 25W40. I would run the 30 wt. in a 4 banger. Stay away from the Fram filters...junk...that's why they are so cheap. Remember the size of the filter affects the amount of oil required for the engine. Purolator filters are a great value for the money...Wal-Mart sells them cheap.
