Not firing on top 2 cylinders

I have a 1996 Bass Tracker Pro Team 17 boat. It has a Mariner 40 HP outboard driven from a side consol. The engine is oil injected.

last time I took it out, I had to place it in Neutral with the throttle pushed all the way forward in order to get it started. When I attempted to shift it into gear, she would stall on me. After further investigation I found out she is only firing on the bottom two cylinders and nothing from the top two. I started with the basics, the plugs. I removed the plugs from the top two cylinders and exchanged them with the bottom two and she started right up, once again when I put it in gear, she stalled. I'm recieving no power via the plug wire to the plug itself.

I have taken it to a few boat mechanics and I have heard everything from the power pack, stator, coil packs......i'm so lost its not even funny.

any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I would recommend getting a good service manual that will help you troubleshoot the ignition. Multi cylinder engines have several components to make them work. You could just throw parts at it $$$$ or spend a few bucks on a manual will help you trouble shoot each component correctly. There are several parts as all the mechanics have indicated that could be bad. Doing ohms tests with some guidance from the manual will tell you which part is bad. As you are putting things back together make sure and clean all the connections with a good electrical connection cleaner that is safe. It is really easy to send you on a wild goose chase looking here or there. If you know you don't have good spark then fix that first.
