"Hi, I need some help on my 19

"Hi, I need some help on my 1973 Johnson 135hp,I took her out to the lake and she would turn over but not fire.Found out there was no spark on all 4 cyl.I thought it might be the stator so I took it to an alternator shop to see if they could rebuild it.They called me back and said everything checked out to be ok and there was no problem with it,so I put it back on.I just purchased a multimeter and im not sure of the easiest way to troubleshoot the powerpack or whatever else it might be with the test meter. Also, before I took the stator off there was a very weak intermittent electric current (but no spark)running through one of the spark plug wires, but none on the other 3.If anyone could help me pin point the problem i would appreciate it,thanks."

"disc red main plug at eng,...

"disc red main plug at eng,...then rig up,to crank w/jumper cables etc,and w/a spark tester see if u now have spark,if so,prob is w/harness or key/control box area,if no spark, furthur ck'ing of ign system is needed.also, even quicker,is disc blk/yellow at pwr pack and test."

"try just this,...there is a b

"try just this,...there is a blk/yellow,wire,connected to power pack........
disconnect it,then w/spark tester, crank and see if u now have spark on all cyl's."

"O.K I tried what you said,I d

"O.K I tried what you said,I diconnected the black/yellow wire and cranked it and I still have no spark at all on any cyl, sorry it took so long to get back with you, wonder what else it could be?"

generally this would be the po

generally this would be the powerpack so test to be sure there is power going to the pack and that no power is leaving the pack.

"NOTE.... Do not have any batt

"NOTE.... Do not have any battery voltage applied to that powerpack. The ignition is self contained similar to a magneto setup. Battery voltage would destroy the Powerpack.

If, with the Black/Yellow wire disconnected form the powerpack, you stil have no spark, the problem is usually the powerpack.

However, if there is any portion of the stator that is cracked and/or oozing out a sticky looking type substance, replace it regardless of whether it shows a proper ohm reading or not.

When time permits, visit my eBay store at: http://stores.ebay.com/Evinrude-Johnson-Outboard-Parts-etc?refid=store"

"could my stator oozing out t

"could my stator oozing out that sticky looking substance,(assuming that it is bad)cause the power pack to fail? And also to test the the powerpack, would i just test for continuity or some other way, thanks!"

yes the stator being bad can c

yes the stator being bad can cause the powerpack not to fire.most the time when someone brings me a stator that is bad it will either run on the high side or the low side but i have seen a few that will not fire at all.generally the way to test the powerpack is to rule everything else out first.

btw joe is very much right you

btw joe is very much right you do not want any voltage going to the powerpack as this can cause serious damage. when i said make sure that the powerpack is getting power i meant make sure the stator is putting out what it should. you can check this with a OHM meter. my suggestion is to get a service manual

"The stator normally emits app

"The stator normally emits approximately 300v AC to the powerpack which energizes the ignition. If the stator is oozing out that substance, it is due to being overheated and this results in a voltage drop to the powerpack.

This in turn results in weak or no ignition. If you're saying that your stator is indeed oozing that substance out of it.... replace it.

There used to be a method whereas the powerpack could be tested with an ohm meter but I do not recall what it was. Check your service manual. It was always easier for me to simply install another pack to determine whether the pack was the cause or not."

"??Two separate problems:

"??Two separate problems:
1978 evinrude 115hp owned since new and no problem until recently started "coughing" at idle and would sometimes quit and when placed in gear would have to pump throttle to get going. Once up to a few rpm`s would run fine until last week--turns over but won't start. 3 cylinders have good spark but one has no spark (compression on this cylinder =120)--is this likely due to faulty ignition coil as the other cylinder on this power pack has good spark and could the two problems be related or do I likely also have a low speed carb problem??

I also recently purchased a 1977 Johnson 15 hp. Looks good and starts easily and idles well with some additional bulb pumping and occansionally will run well at full throttle for 45-60 seconds and then slows down. I disconnected the fuel hose and it throws fuel back out of the inlet connector. I presume this is a fuel pump problem. If so, is the fuel pump rebuildable or should I buy a new one??

Thanks for any help."
