I have a bayliner 3.0 merc alpha 1 i/o and the boat seemed to be running fine then completely shut off. Turning the key i get nothing at all. Battery is fine, blower and pump both work. Anyone know what would cause this? Had to put the trim up manually

alt shorted out and took out the 90A fuse link on the starter`s battery post
but a year and serial number would be helpful too

Hello. I gott the same problem on my mercruiser 5.0mpi-03. All gauges dead when i turned the key on. Checked the 50 amp circkut breaker nothing wrong there. After 30 min it worked again. Second time that happend. Sorry for my english iam from sweden :)

intermittent kraft orsakas vanligtvis av en dålig jordanslutning
intermittant power is usually caused by a poor ground connection

ok. the question then is where to start looking? Is there a power scheme to get on the internet? thanks for the reply.

Start from the battery. Make sure that the positive connection on the battery is clean and tight on the battery and to the battery switch and that the cable is in good condition ( no corrosion, no broken strands). Are you connection to the large lead posts or to the screw posts?

Check same from battery switch to connection on starter.

Check same for the negative connection which should run from the negative connection on the battery to the engine block.

Most problems of this type are in this area.

All connections are tight. Im getting 12v to my starter through the fuse, to my solenoid, and to my circuit breaker yet when i turn the key i dont get anything, not even my trim. Any ideas? Nothing happens when i push the reset almost as if its a bas breaker? I know on GFIs you should be able to trip it then reset if theres power through it but not sure where it goes from there because the way the wires are grouped together. Should i try buying a new 90amp fuse first?

No ,your starter power comes from the battery cable You need to read 12v at the alt output terminal, at both sides of the 50A circuit breaker and you need 12v on the Red wire at the key switch
Report the results but also check the battery ground cables BOTH ENDS

5stars to you my friend. Had 12v everywhere, went to the starter had nothing, follwed it back to a 10amp fuse, swapped it out and boat fired right up. Thank you!!

Next problem- trim still isnt working, all the other fuses seemed good, is this more than a fuse? Both happened at the same time. Any ideas why the trim isnt getting power/an easy way to figure it out? New to boats
Lastly, is there a reason why the fuse blew? Too many amps? Had the boat all year never ran into this problem

Hello had the same problem with no power on my 89 Cobia turned out to be the ignition key assembly. The key assembly was original to the boat production, after 30 years they do wear out. Replaced it and all works fine

Happy boating Middle Gary
