Good afternoon folks - I recently bought a 1991 starcraft boat with a 1991 Johnson outboard(120 HP V4). It had an intermittent tilt/trim issue where it would operate in the down cyckle but not in the up cycle. the Previous owner indcated that if I tapped the outside of the junctin box (in the motor compartment) it would then work. That did, indeed, make it operatinal in the up cycle but not everytime. I want to fix this correctly. What I discovered is that I could hear the relay clicking when I used either the remote switch or the switch on the motor but the motor wouldn't move. It worked fine in the down mode. I switch the relays and the problem followed the switch to the down mode. I replaced both relays and it "seems" to be operating fine now. I don't fee; comfortanle that I have completely solved this problem. When I disconnected the relay (both up and down) I noticed there was a gummy substance on the terminal prongs coming from the inside of the socket openings. This substance was cisible on the new relay after assembling. I'm wonderng if this substance is some type of waterproofing or condictive material? In other words is it something that is supposed to be there or shoud I attempt to clean it out of the sockets. I was going to just buy new connector assemblies but discovered they are no longer avaiable.
