New Guy With a Question

Good afternoon folks - I recently bought a 1991 starcraft boat with a 1991 Johnson outboard(120 HP V4). It had an intermittent tilt/trim issue where it would operate in the down cyckle but not in the up cycle. the Previous owner indcated that if I tapped the outside of the junctin box (in the motor compartment) it would then work. That did, indeed, make it operatinal in the up cycle but not everytime. I want to fix this correctly. What I discovered is that I could hear the relay clicking when I used either the remote switch or the switch on the motor but the motor wouldn't move. It worked fine in the down mode. I switch the relays and the problem followed the switch to the down mode. I replaced both relays and it "seems" to be operating fine now. I don't fee; comfortanle that I have completely solved this problem. When I disconnected the relay (both up and down) I noticed there was a gummy substance on the terminal prongs coming from the inside of the socket openings. This substance was cisible on the new relay after assembling. I'm wonderng if this substance is some type of waterproofing or condictive material? In other words is it something that is supposed to be there or shoud I attempt to clean it out of the sockets. I was going to just buy new connector assemblies but discovered they are no longer avaiable.

Thanks for Any thoughts or experiences you may have

Rick -

The stuff you see (no doubt black) is anti corrosive grease, designed obviously to fight corrosion. And yes... you had one bad relay... one is good which you should save for a spare.

Thanks guys - at this point it seems to be working so I beleive I am going to let it go as is for the time being.

Now another question - when I first pulled the top cover off the motor I found a plastic handle loose. further investigation leads me to believe it is broken off a thumb wheel device. It appears the the thumbwheel threads onto a shaft and the attached handle (it has a blind hole that fits over a plunger) pushes the plunger in as the thumbwheel is threaded onto the shaft. The plunger appears to be connected to some sort of carb adjustment part - but I am way out of my league now.

Here's a few pictures of the current situation - the first shows the plastic thumbwheel and the plunger extending out to the right (far right of thephoto), the second shows where the handle would go and the third shows the plunger connection at the carb area.

So my question is what does this do and what section of the motor manual would I look in to find the correct part number for replacement?

Thanks
Rick

Good morning guys - just checking in to see if there were any thoughts regarding the broken piece in the photos above?

Thanks
Rick

I can tell you that part is critical... setting idle timing etc, however the exact procedure excapes me. If no other member jumps in here with the exact procedure, I suggest you obtain the specific service manual for the engine (not one that covers a half dozen models) in order to become aware of that procedure.

Item #81 #0432095 and is unavailable and couldnt find one on ebay. Search seaway marine in seattle and give them a call they may have one on shelf or off a used motor?

Wellafter a little more looking it seems I need part 84 - the cap. Ifound a piece of the thimbwheel still threaded intopart #84. It appears to be broken off the thumbwheel which looks like the number 84. I also ordered the manual - I have an electronic copy but I really need a paper copy to thumb through and for $30 I'm not sure I could print it that cheap - given the cost of printer ink these days.
