new engine wiring mismatch

I have an older merc engine that I am replacing with a newer model. The new model has a cannon-type plug in engine for wiring hookup, but my older one has just wires. How do I make them match? Is there a kit or splice part I can find?

What engine, year and SN are you talking about? It may be worth the money getting a new/used wire harness to match the newer engine. A new one should come w/labeled wires for easy installation.

The older 40 hp sn 3822003 has the larger external/rubber plug(paddle shape) with 7 pins The 70 hp sn OC12460(or 9)4 small round internal 7 pin.

Can I direct hard wire if I cannot get adapter part to go from new to old?

It will be cheaper to find a used late model control box and install it as I doubt yours has the wiring for trim, Merc has discontinued the adapter for this....

Mercury has the adaptor to go from one motor to the other. It will connect to the harness from the shift box to the harness to the motor. You do not have to hard wire anything. The part # is 93669a2 Just got this from a friend who had the same issue. Pretty much what you suggested. Thanks again faztbullet!

OK picking up a part from local Mercury parts supplier. They say it is an adaptor (128.00) to go from my 40 hp(60's) to the new 70 hp(80's).
Is this hard to install or are just talking about a plug in? Sorry to be so lame about this. I'm a good aircraft/car mechanic but first jaunt into the outboard motor world! Thanks again for you assistance.

Awesome!!! Thanks! Now on to the Gale Buccaneer 35 hp. Really enjoy these old engines. Love this forum and help like yours. Keep the water on the outside!
