IMG_5976.jpegIMG_5992.jpegIMG_5978.jpegIMG_5979.jpgIMG_5980.jpegShort story is I belong to a sailing club that had a boat donated. Because in the valley of the blind the one eyed man is king I'm working on it. Model number is gone off of sticker and there are also no spark plugs in it because it was at a shop that said mice were living in it. I hoped they hadn't' chewed up any harnesses but that wasn't an issue. Ultimately I need to get head gaskets and spark plugs for it to see what happens. Any suggestions to go with head gasket replacement will also be appreciated,

Cylinder that mice had nest in is probably ruined as urine is corrosive.

There is rust but no real pitting. I understand doing it right would require a teardown and probably OS pistons and I would never do this for a paying customer (you know those favors when you try and save a customer some money and they say they understand but it goes bad?) It's a donated boat that so far has cost us nothing so if there is no water in the gear case I'll clean the rust with a scotchbrite pad spend $80 on the head gaskets, put some spark plugs in it and see what happens. I've looked at enough parts listings to know all of the head gaskets are the same but spark plug listings for Evinrudes in the late 90's seem to have a gap in them. QL78YC is my best guess right now as I think this engine is circa 1997. I will add that my experience with big outboards is very limited but I have been working on cars since I was 13 and lawnmowers before that. I spent a long time turbocharging cars and have a good grip on how internal combustion engines work. I have also seen seized up engines have penetrating oil squirted down the spark plug holes, freed up and run for years. If we can get a season out of this engine life is good and then it can go to where old engines go. What could possibly go wrong!

IMG_5981.jpegIMG_5982.jpegIMG_5983.jpegIMG_5984.jpeg Thanks for the help. Here's the rest of what I have. If there is something specific a picture of would help let me know, I will be there tomorrow chasing threads and cleaning gasket surfaces.

I'll check the carb. I found a part number on the left cylinder head, 9340839. That p/n does not come up in marine engine.com parts listing but I googled it and the result I got said 1996 225 model E225CZEDE. I look up that model number on a couple of different sites and the cylinder head p/n doesn't match what I have. I really want to get the head gaskets right on the first try. It looks like I have two choices for head gaskets, 0333670 or 0345257. The marine.com picture of 034257 matches what I have with only 2 small vents at the bottom and not 3. I'm going for those head gaskets but now I wonder if I have a 225 with a 200 cowl.

IMG_6011.jpgIMG_6014.jpgIMG_6012.jpgIMG_6015.jpgIMG_6009.jpegmore pictures. I was wrong about the head gaskets, there are 3 bleed holes at bottom, not 2. It looks like there really re only two choices for head gaskets for these engines in the 1990's. I believe that 0333670 are the gaskets I need.

Thanks! That really looks like it as the others I looked at did not have the sealant on them.
would QL77JC4 be the correct spark plugs?
and while I'm asking lots of questions are the Sierra gaskets any good? Marineengine.com only has one OEM.

More information on identifying engine. It is '95 or earlier based on the red plug but can't be '93 or older because head bolts are 5/16" and they would have been 3/8" for '93 or older engine. The earlier head gaskets do not have the sealant on them either.
