I have a 1988 135 mercury.I have been told that the only difference between the 135 and the 150 is the carburetors. Is this correct?( larger venturis)
If this is correct .How do I make sure when buying a different set of carbs that I am buying 150 carbs and not another set of 135s?

Using your engine serial number you search for the correct part number. If I may ask, why are you buying new carbs and not rebuilding yours?

NO! The internals are massively tweaked on the 150, which was all Merc could safely get out of that 99 incher without going to external reeds and 6 carbs.

It is a v6.I have twin 1988 135s on my boat and wanted to bump them up to 150s.I was told all I had to do was change the carbs. The 135 and 150 is the same bore and stroke.I wanted to buy a set of 150 carbs to get the extra power and wanted to make sure i was getting 150 carbs and not 135s.
How can I tell the difference? Are there any numbers?

The top, middle and bottom carbs are slightly different. I think the jetting is the difference...not 100% sure. Use your 135 HP SN first to see what you have by PN and then compare your SN in the 150 HP range. A dealer will get the correct carbs...by the way, you'll need a bank loan.

Had some time to do some checking this morning.
The 135 and 150 have the same part numbers for the Reed Housing(intake) and the reed valves and reed block.
The carbs have different numbers 135 150
Top WH40-1 WH48-1
135 Center WH38-2 150 WH40-2
Bottom Wh38-3 WH40-3
The timing set the same also.I found a set on e-bay for 150.00.
Thanks for all the good suggestions.

For those of you who have a question like Tony, what he did is what YOU should do: Write down all of the pertinent part numbers for your engine, then for the one you want to emulate. Then compare. I've solved many a mystery like that.
