Mercury 60hp fourstroke 2011 weird problem

G'day, I have a merc 60 fourstroke 2011 that has an issue, I can idle all day fine, run on the plane all day fine, as soon as I get to trolling speed, 2000-2800 I can sit on these revs for a small amount of time until the engine starts to run rough as in no fuel pressure, I did get a bit of water in the tank awhile ago and the problem has persisted ever since, I changed fuel filters twice, cleaned the lines, drained the vapour separator, had the fuel pump apart. Maybe its a coincidence with the water in the fuel and maybe a sensor? When the problem first started I could quickly drop back to nutral give it a quick rev, drop it back into gear and it was fine for 15mins to 1 hour. Now when it starts its issue I turn the key off, and restart instantly and its good to go again.... I did notice the small water separator on the engine only appears to have a minute amount of fuel in it, Is this normal? When I pump th eprimer bulb it fills up then nearly empties, It only has this issue in gear under load. When the problem has started Ive tried pumping the primer bulb with no change, Only restarting the outboard seems to work now. No alarms sound, no beeps, no codes...... Thanks.

It would be my suggestion, if you are going to poke around under the hood, that you at least invest in a Seloc's manual for your model.

A modern 60 4 stroke is not a simple engine like two strokes of days gone by and some of the components in there are fairly expensive - you don't want an "ooops" that ends up costing you hundreds of bucks.

However, since this is a 2011 and it comes with a 3 year factory warranty personally I wouldn't go "poking" at it without first getting it into a dealer. Merc will no doubt look for any reason not to warranty something if it turns out to be expensive and if there is evidence of you picking at it they will certainly blame you.

It may be something as simple as a toasted bladder in the low pressure pump as has been suggested, but if it is an issue with the ECM or something funky with the "troll control" or another sensor, better to let Merc find it - at least if they are on the hook to fix it..

bought this new in a box at action from a marine dealership. merc marine australia wont cover thisengine under waranty.. is the low pressure pump located on the front side of the vapour seperator?..... ive wprked at a mercruiser dealership for over ten years. but have not delved into fourstroke outboards so much.

http://www.bbcboards.net/mercury-3-...ad-here-upgrade-fuel-supply-system-first.html you may want to look at this....notice the ''suck closed'' statement...the fact that the problem goes away when you kill the engine and restart is trying to tell us something...i just dont know what...but if you had something sucked into an orifice or something them killing the engine would relieve the suction and let the blockage possibly move a tad...
i replaced a 90 evinrude 2 cycle with a 2010-2011 model merc 60hp bigfoot 4 cycle...merc dont use model years anymore...they go by serial number...the first thing i did was contaminate it with somewhat old ethanol fuel...i could see the white crap in the bottom of my water filter.(canister type)....cleaned it all up and changed filters and hoses...then ran a couple bottle of cleaners sold by the merc dealer...it is a yellow color...the treatment is blue...ha run well for 20 months....i do not troll at your stated rpm but have done a lot of scouting in that range with no problem....i think any efi engine is critical about any fuel contamination at all...

Agree that a factory service manual is better than Seloc's - I use both. However, for the "average" guy, where Seloc's has hints/tips that say things like "don't get carb cleaner on this or you will melt it", the factory manual "assumes" you already know that - or it "assumes" that you know how to remove a certain part or the sequence or whatever.

Given that many go at motors with "no manual", the Seloc's is superior to "nothing" and unless you are buying pirated "on-line" factory manuals, Seloc's is less than half the price of a service manual.

Anyhow,

here's a diagram of the fuel system (from the service manual).

no I didnt. i probabally should do that tromorrow and put it on the dyno... if if was a delaminated fuel line wouldnt this be at high revs too?

Today i hooked a fuel pump pressure gauge to tthe shrader valve and at idle i only seem to read 6.81psi. Is this normal? I was thinking if it was the fuel pump wouldnt i have the problem througout all the high rpms?. Thanks.

Sprocket85 I know this is an old thread but did you ever figure out your weird problem?? My 60HP Merc. is doing the exact same thing!
