"I have searched the forum for a similar posting, however, I did not find one that covers my problem. Here goes: Last weekend I purchased a 14' aluminum boat with a 25 HP Mercury outboard. I am unable to find a serial number anywhere on the motor. I have looked for a plate or sticker on the pivot mount as well as everywhere else. I talked with a rep at Mercury and was told that the serial number is also located on the starboard side of the motor block just ahead of the upper spark plug. What I found was: 872-9076-C2. There was another number located forward of the first number (A XK 1 14406-C), but it does not look like a serial number. I was told the number should begin with a OS or OB followed by 6 digits. I should mention, the person I purchased the boat and motor from did not have a clue as to the serial number or year. He simply took the boat to the local boat shop for service. I am trying to purchase parts so that I can get the motor ready for the fishing season. Any help would be greatly appreciated."
