Mercury 225 promax

Hi,I wonder if anyone can help me with this.I am looking at buying a 21foot boat with
a Merc 225 promax.The whole rig is in very good condition generally.
The engine has the unpainted bullet shaped lower unit with low water pick up and i
think this is the standard gearbox for this engine.The owner says he always starts it in
gear as the box crunches badly otherwise.I have owned/driven a lot of high performance
boats but never with this box,Is this normal?
Any help much appreciated.

NO!!!! This should be a sportmaster gearcase

Thanks for that I now recognise the sportmaster name,couldn't think what it was.
So it should slip in and out of gear same as any other merc?

Hi,just let people know I bought that P21 with the 2003 merc promax 225,gearbox is fine.
Only problem wth the motor is its missing the lower cowling,the bit that covers the powerhead to middle casing bolts.
The part number is 108 849534a1.
It $695 from merc so if anyone has a used 1 I would pay a good(reasonable price)

hi everyone,could anyone advise me on this.The Merc 225 promax on the back of my boat
is performing perfectly apart from 1 small issue.The alarm beeps if i give it a rev in neutral,
it never beeps apart from this and when you put the ignition on.I can't see any reason for this
and it isn't causing a problem so far,any ideas?

Don't rev it in neutral. Over speed alarm.
