Mercruiser 5.0 V8 Engine Problems

I just bought a new boat and put it in the water for the first time last night. It idles perfectly, but when going full throttle the boat only goes 10 miles per hour. The engine does not rev high or sound like it is struggling. I have not had a chance to take a look at it today, but wouldn't even know what to look at. Any ideas? It's an inboard/outboard.

Could be something wrong with your throttle linkage. That would be the first thing to check.

Next would be carburator/fuel injection issues? Maybe the fuel pump is going bad and the engine is starving for gas?

Just a couple suggestions.

Know cars ? Mechanic bye trade ? Got tools ?

So give us some info carb,- year - drive -

But for now can you take off the carb cover. Have someone move the thottle cable . You see the throttle cable move fully ?

No carb cover ? See the cable move fully ?

Nope I bought it used, the previous owner replaced the motor in 2006 when he bought the boat, and replaced the carb in 2009. We had it running again last night and ruled out the throttle linkage, the fuel pump and the prop. We also checked for water in the gas and oil and found none. Not sure what to do next. Any more ideas?

What year and type of distributor? If mechanical, check the advance mechanism under the points plate.

Figured it out, took the carb off and there was a lot of gunk in it so we cleaned it and the boat is running like new again. Thanks for all of the help!

Have a 1998 sea ray 290 sundancer with twin 5.0 efi on alpha 1 gen 2 drives. Runs great till i take off. Neither motor will get over 3000 rpm. Boat sat for 7 years on land before i bought. Changed out everything i can think of. Any thoughts
