Merc 1250 wiring help

I've got a merc 1250 and the wiring is far gone so I'm in the process of making my own harness. My question is how to wire up a key switch I have a wiring diagram but it only tells you the color wire and not nesicarily what the wire is for. I've got as far as hooking up the battery side of the switch and the selinioed so the motor turns over just stumped on the rest. Also the original switch is no good so I'm just using a universal one since a original seems to be impossible to find. And help would be greatly aperciated. Thanks
