My motor I think is a Mecury 25XD 1984 outboard

Serial number - 6592711 - I live in Canada

I understand that putting electric start is expensive however I am looking for some assistance on if the Quicksilver kit 50-90983a5 will work for my motor

Really appreciate the help

Try calling Tim's Outboard in Hackensack MN. They have set me up with conversion kits for half price. Tell 'em Tim sent ya! 218 682-2331. Does your flywheel have the ring gear on it already? Have your serial # ready.

Where in Canada ?----Are you looking for battery charging ?-----Start / run with tiller or remote starting from a helm ?------Donor motor is the way to go.-----And your search is not limited to a 1984 model 25 HP.-----Many others use the same starter.

O, that's right, Racer, he is in Canada, maybe close by me. I have a motor like his, but no electric start, either. Got a couple Mariners but too nice to canabalize. What is special about the XD designation?

Howdy to all that replied

I live near Listowel Ontario - about 1hr north of Kitchener

The Motor in question is tiller and I am looking for min battery charging. The motor starts great with pull so actual starting is not a must have par say

I have not looked again but if my memory serves me correctly it does not have the ring gear on it presently but will need to walk out to driving shed and look to be 100% on that one

The support here is great ......

Not overly keen on spending Ebay money if there are other options. This motor has been great for me but really need a charging circuit and if electric start comes with great :)

Regarding the XD I only put that in there as when I did a S/N check it came up as a 1984 - 25HPXD. No idea what the XD means but I will say it moves my 14 foot through the water like grease lightning

Guess that leaves me for the support team to point me in the right direction and maybe have an opportunity to meet someone in Ontario that can help

Thansk a bunch

Give Proctor Marine a call - they are down in Simcoe. The guy on the parts desk is pretty knowledgeable.

The 25XD was pretty much the same platform up until (maybe) 1987 and shared parts with the 9.9's/15's as far as the charge stator (the add on one - three bobbins). That (stator) plus a rectifier will allow you to charge a battery.

But before you go the expense consider that at max rpms (that) stator only puts out 4 amps (5000-6000 rpms) and doesn't even put out 1 amp until you are making 2000 rpms. So think of it as nothing more than a "maintenance charger" - great to keep a starting battery "topped up" but insufficient to replenish a mostly discharged deep cycle that you might use for a trolling motor.

I just can't find my parts lists for the (kits) for converting the older manual portable motors to electric or remote, sorry, so can't say for sure that the kit number you cited is correct or not.

I do know that the gear ring that you can add to your existing flywheel IS still in stock at a few places despite Merc listing it as "no longer available", but they are going for somewhat north of 300 bucks Canadian. Add any number of generic starters thou (100 bucks) and a solenoid/starter switch and you could have "electric start".

I do have the exact "charge stator" that you would install on your motor on my 15 horse. I don't use it to feed a rectifier, instead Merc used to have what they called a "lighting regulator" that it feeds and gives you a 12 volt source to wire up Nav Lights "without" having a battery on board and when the motor is at idle there is barely enough juice to produce any light at all (and only have two bulbs being fed) - works great when you give it some throttle, but the power really is "minimal" - so depending on your "expectation" the cost might outweigh the benefit...

The only thing changed on platform were: block went from chrome to Mercosil 1994, Tilliston carb subbed by Walbro, addition of t-stat in early 80's, cowl and cosmetics. 90% of all parts will interchange except some internal mechanical parts when you get into Mercosil.. Parts up to early 2000's will fit till they went 4 banger in late 2006...

Excellent information. Good to hear from Graham. Your lighting alternator is similar to my 1969 Olympic 12.3. Exactly 1 candle power at idle. But it has taken me 40 years through the rough bush in NW Ontario. Will never, ever give it up. A machine that you can trust with your life, and I have, many many times.

This is great info

I currently run 2 batteries and a solar panel so if I can find a coil setup for a reasonable price it will be a great addition

If there are any other peeps in Ontario near Kitchener that may have used parts please let me know

Thx a bunch this place is great
