mariner vs mercury

How compatible are mercury and mariner motors. Does anyone know if a foot from a 1985 65hp mariner will fit a 67 65hp merc? Are the controls on a 67 65hp merc compatible with a 78 85hp mariner? Thanks for your help.

Lower unit will not swap between the 67 and 85 models - a number of changes in that time, and nothing to do with whether they were painted black or grey and had Merc or Mariner stickers.

Ditto on the 67's harness, not the same as used on the 85 horse (model 850) which was only built up until 1977 (so can't be a 78 model).

Most Merc's were redesigned in 1985/86 so they are not backward compatible for earlier years.

Likewise, sometime in the mid 70's (74, 75, 76) most models went through a redesign.

If you are looking for swap-able parts you are going to have to stay within a couple of years of the model you are looking to refit, "most of the time".

A little clarity on this, the reason it wont work is the 1985 65 is a 3 cyl and the 1967 is a 4 cyl. Any year 4 cyl 65 will fit along with any 4cyl 66.6 ci motors which include :1969-1987 80/800/80/85/75 and with or without preload as it doesnt not matter just shaft lenght. If you can find the old wiring harness adapter(Ebay)(flat plug to barrel)you can use your old box...

Thanks for your help. First boat and just looking at options. You say any 69-87, 4 cyl 75-85hp foot would work on my 1967, 65hp motor? Is that most of the 75-85hp motors of those years? It also sounds like it doesn't matter if Merc or Mariner just if the years are the same. Is that correct? Thanks again.

Yes as long as they are 4 cylinder models(66ci)

That is correct, most will be merc as the mariners where later(80's) in 75 and 80hp
