Many different carburetor models whats the main difference ???

Hey guys I have a question about all the different cab models For my 2002 75hp # 0T564442 ELPTO. First off, why is there 5 different carbs for my engine model year, and what are the differences, The only thing I can think of is the Main Jets ??

It shows 5 different 75hp model carbs

WME-82 WME-84 WME-75 WME-103 WME-106

The numbers on my carbs come back as a Non Electric/Non oil injected 75hp. But my motor is a ELPTO/ Electric start and oil injected ?? I purchased it from the original owner and nothing was ever replaced or added so I dont understand.

I am looking into this because I have had an ongoing issue with the top end falling flat on its face and feeling like it was running out of fuel up top. Everything you could replace and check or clean I have already done. This had me looking back into the carbs again because it always felt like fuel starvation to me, So the main jets in my carbs are all 3 @ .52 and that is correct for those carb numbers BUT... The carb model number that should be on there according to my specs calls for .52 on top and .54 middle and .54 bottom.. This would make sense about my issue I was having were it felt lean and flat on top end with hesitation..

So I wanted to know what made all these model carbs different from each other and whether I could just change the main Jets to get where i need or is there more to it ?

Thanks for any help !

The basic carb body itself was the same on the WME 59/60/61/62/75/76/77/78/82 and 83. Likewise the same on the WME 32/32A/33/34/40/40A and WME 59/60/61/62/75/76/77/78/82 and 83.

Those models were used on 75 and 90 horse models (which share a powerhead).

Sometimes there is different jets - in 1994 the 75 ELPTO had .050/.052/.050 jets, switched to .052/.052/.052 in 1995 and finally settled on .052/.054/.054 in 1998 and beyond. Given that all those were in the same mechanical model run I can't see a slightly different jet being a major issue unless it's really "different" - yes, they "tweaked" the carbs over the years (and gave them a different number in the process), but a 94 model with it's smaller jets all round certainly didn't "run like junk".

All of Merc's carbs built by Walbro are like that - the model number part - I think if they even change a set screw on them they would give them a different model number. The 9.9 Merc started production in late 1985 and finally ceased in 2012. A carb from the very first model will bolt right up and work perfectly on the very last model produced some 27 years later. I stopped counting when I got to the 25th "different carb number" and I was only part way through the mid-1990's models.

If you really think something is messed up simply buy the jets that should be in there and swap out whatever you have. At the very least that would knock them off the list of possible issues. And yes, you can simply swap out the jets - they will fit without doing anything else.

You say it isn't so but are you sure the previous owner didn't have the carbs swapped at some point due to an issue (or even an entire powerhead) - a 95 thru 98 carb would have the .052 jets top to bottom - just saying... (and maybe I wouldn't mention that either if I was trying to sell the "perfect motor" that I didn't want to keep because it was "too perfect" for me :) )

That's correct as there a 5 different powerheads.. 91-93 use one series,93-95different,96 and early 97,07 by itself as was 98. The difference is port timing(intake windows)and cast in emulsion tubes in carbs.

ME-P3-07-R Mercury Reman Powerhead 75/90HP 1991-1993
ME-P3-08-R Mercury Reman Powerhead 75/90HP 1994-1995
ME-P3-09-R Mercury Reman Powerhead 75/90HP 1996-Early 1997
ME-P3-09A-R Mercury Reman Powerhead 75/90HP Late 1997
ME-P3-10-N Mercury New Powerhead 75/90HP 1998-Up
ME-P3-10-R Mercury Reman Powerhead 75/90HP 1998-Up

Thanks for that detailed explanation Galamb, very much appreciated !! I do understand having different carb numbers over the years for sure, But It was the fact that "my year model" had 5 different carbs is what confused me. And even the jetting for a non oil injected VS oil injected of "my model year" was different, Non oil injected calls for all 3 carbs to have a .52 and oil injected called for top .52 center and bottom to have .54 I mean whats the difference anyway because they are both passing the same mixture of gas and oil anyway ? For some reason mine has all .52 so I plan on changing them to the oil injected spec jetting ( as mine should be ) since this is what I have and hope this helps with my issue, Just hope I dont need to have the spec carb also since whats on there now reverts to a Non electric start / Non oil injected.

As for the original owner, I know him very well and have all documented receipts of work ever performed, The boat has VERY little time on it, was only used few time a year at best. For my model year they still do call for .52 on all 3 carbs if it is a Non electric start / Non oil injected >>> http://www.boats.net/parts/search/MercuryMarine/0T564442/3374/120/Carburetor/parts.html
