Lower unit shift rod length

Hey guys.

i have a 1982 Johnson 75HP J75TLCNB. i am installing the lower unit on a newly rebuild power head. I’m wondering what the distance from the center hole on the shift rod to the top mating surface of the lower unit should be.

I’ve tried measuring that out and it seems like the shift rod bottoms out before that measurement.

You have tried that ?----From a chart that is the correct value.-----So please do tell EXACTLY how you are measuring this on your lower unit ?

I didn’t have the gearbox in neutral but had it in reverse. I figured it out. Thanks guys
