I do not have the fixture for shimming driveshaft,does anyone know of another way to preload this assembly? Its a 40 horse evinrude model E40TLCEC. 1989 year

Take it to a dealer and hand him $30 and let them set height for ya..

If all your doing is a reseal just put it back together. As long as you have the same driveshaft, pinion and thrust bearing the height should be good as long as you have the same shims.
