lower unit interchanges

i have a 1972 80 hp merc. Shop busted lower unit, i need to know if anyone can tell me what horsepoer and years will fit my engine. Thanks

Any 4 cylinder inline Merc from 1969 to 1988 of these hp....650/800/850/80/85/75

Didn't some of those LUs use a goofy, square 'spline' shifter shaft? Seem to recall getting stuck with one.

when you get one,second hand,take your prop,fit it and turn the prop 6 times,any noise from the bearings ,walk away,
got a gearbox a couple of months ago for mine, of a marine eng,and he showed me how to test them.
