Loose tube in lower unit?

Hello, thank you for allowing me to join. I have a 2005 Honda BF50A outboard, was changing the water pump and while dropping the lower unit down, a short metal tube fell down. I have no idea where it came from, does anyone know what it is and where it goes? This is a very low hour engine and I’m the third owner, my first time changing the water pump.

The tube.

Hi Nhall,

Welcome.

I honestly don't know. Never worked on a 50 A.
But, that looks suspiciously like one of the screw/bolt spacers.
(Honda calls them collars)

See items 52, 53, 54 and 55 in the link.

While dimensions are given for 52, 54 and 55, I tend to think 53 (labled as being for the water screen but no dimensions) could be the item even though it doesn't look long enough to match your photos.

Just tossing it out there for your consideration.

Good luck.

I have my 50 apart right now... l didn't see anything like that...i did notice that my lower unit has a breather tube that sticks straight up to get above water line I am guessing... none of my other Honda's have this breather
My lower unit is at my other shop so I can't look at it ... but the rest of my 50 is here .... I will have a look tonight and report back.
A pic of the above view of your lower unit may help

Thanks for your reply, I will check tomorrow and see f the previous owner had dropped a collar when putting back the bottom cover on, not sure it’s called a cover that’s above the lower unit and below the engine.

I have my case extention on my shop floor right now and I looked from top and bottom and I see nothing that resembles that piece.... I am really leaning towards your vent tube... so a pic would help.... if I had my lower unit here I could examine mine.... but I will likely be there in a couple days

I think you found it ... but does not explain how it ended up inside the housing...it is an exterior plastic trim cover.... I did a quick measure and if that is it it needs to be 1.6 inches long... mine did not have those that I can see or maybe it fell unnoticed when I removed mine of it was lost if previous owner had appart

Tho with some bad luck when the cover was removed it could of hit a hole in one here at the pass thru hole for shifter rod
