Leaking hydraulic fluid from steering guide tube

chuddles

I have an old Mercruiser 470 with hydraulic steering - no power steering- and recently noticed fluid leaking at the end of the steering guide tube where ram rod exits. Consequently have very unresponsive steering until I top up the fluid at the helm. I'm guessing theres an oil seal in the guide tube thats worn. Can anyone tell me if this is repairable or do I need a new guide tube and steering rod. If it's repairable can anyone give me some tips on how to go about it. I've searched the forums and found plenty of info on power steering but nothing that describes how to fix this problem. Access to the guide tube is difficult and I'm hoping to be able to fix it without removing the motor. Any help would be appreciated. I'm new to this forum and if there's an existing thread on this I'd appreciate someone pointing me in the right direction.

Ayuh,..... Ya got something aftermarket on there,.....

Ya gotta provide more info for any help,....

Pictures will be a pretty good start,.....

Hi, Getting a current photo is near impossible without removing the motor. However I have a photo from a few years back when I reconditioned the motor . I'm pretty sure this is not an aftermarket hydraulic steering system but standard for this model Mercruiser.
seem to be having problems getting the phot to upload but I’ll keep trying

Ayuh,.... Whatever it is, the Fix, is to pull the steerin' ram, tear it apart, 'n replace the seals, 'n any worn parts,.....

Early SeaStar. Obsolete and finding parts likely much hassle. Highly recommend updated system. However, it is probably a readily available sized seal, so any good hydraulics shop should be able to recondition your cylinder for pretty small money.

Thanks for this info. Just realised when looking st the photos that I should be able to unscrew the hydraulic ram assembly from the guide tube. Thought I was going to remove guide tube and all in one which would be nearly impossible without removing the motor.
Thanks again for the advice and comments. I’ll let you know how I go. Cheers.
